Our digs

Christ's College, where we are, is one of around thirty schools which make up Cambridge University. These colleges have three hundred to four hundred students each, and go back 800 years, the first, Peterhouse, having been founded in 1247! Christ's was founded in 1437, expanded in 1505 (by a woman, Lady Margaret Beaufort, mother of King Henry VII), and some of the grandest buildings here now date from the early 1600's. Our accommodations are in an old section, but thankfully have been modernized so that, unlike the medieval section of Corpus Christi we visited yesterday, we have a bathroom in our rooms rather than around the corner, through a long dark hallway, and up a flight of stairs! So here are a few pictures of our pied a terre.

The dining area - we huddle over this little table, which is just big enough for the two of us.


And - most importantly - the kitchen, or "gyp room", as it is mysteriously called:



We have only the two-burner hotplate you see at the back for cooking , along with obligatory microwave (we don't really know how to cook with a microwave....), so, just like Mom when we first moved to Prinsevinken Park in Holland the First Time, we have to get darned creative with the victuals. No oven, so no roasting! Plus, for reasons which remain obscure to us, the hotplate has cycles of heating and cooling no matter what temperature it is set at, so...sauteeing also doesn't quite work.
