On my rambles around Amsterdam, I stumbled on the Museum Van Loon, which isn't crazy at all and has nothing to do with Ducks Unlimited. Turns out that the Van Loon family were the originators of the Dutch East India Company, one of the enterprises that made Holland trade-wealthy back in the 1700's. This house is furnished as it was in 1750, and my oh my but were they ever in to matching! The walls, the bedspread, the carpet....see the bedroom pix below for a truly coordinated palette. They also liked to have their initials all over everything: one occupant had the stair rails done in his script and another had the "S" of his last name configured into the moldings in the ceiling. There were huge oriental vases and mahogany cabinets and Chinese enameled screens - a booty of objets d'arts from around the whole world, seemingly.
It's good to be the maritime kings, apparently!
There was a lovely garden outside with some interesting sculpture and the admonition:
